How to Achieve an Ultra-High Vacuum Environment

Wiki / 08/24/2025

To achieve an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment, several steps and techniques are required. UHV usually refers to pressures below 10⁻⁷ Pa, where even trace amounts of gas molecules can interfere with experiments or processes.

First, the vacuum chamber must be designed with suitable materials, such as stainless steel or aluminum alloys, which release very little gas and can withstand high temperatures for baking. Surfaces inside the chamber are usually polished and cleaned to reduce trapped gases.

Second, the process typically begins with a roughing pump, such as a rotary vane pump or a dry scroll pump, to bring the pressure down to the low vacuum range. Once this level is reached, a high-vacuum pump like a turbomolecular pump or diffusion pump is used to further reduce pressure. To reach UHV conditions, ion pumps, getter pumps, or cryogenic pumps are often added. These pumps target the remaining molecules that mechanical pumps cannot remove effectively.

Another essential step is baking the chamber. By heating the chamber walls to 150–250 °C, adsorbed water vapor and gases are released and then pumped away, significantly lowering the base pressure.

Additionally, careful sealing techniques are important. Metal gaskets, such as copper seals in ConFlat flanges, are commonly used because they prevent leaks better than elastomer seals.

Finally, maintaining UHV requires strict clean assembly procedures. All parts must be cleaned to avoid contamination, and venting the chamber with clean, dry gases like nitrogen is often done before opening.

In summary, creating an ultra-high vacuum environment involves a combination of well-chosen materials, a staged pumping system, baking to remove surface gases, and careful sealing. These measures together make it possible to achieve and sustain extremely low pressures needed for advanced scientific and industrial applications.
